You have identified some of the reasons for getting poor results, with email marketing, including not targeting the market, not planning the campaigns.
The first and most important thing for successful email marketing is to have a loyal list of targeted subscribers with whom you have already established trust and a good working relationship.
But, as you say, even with that, some campaigns don’t quite hit the mark. Sometimes it is just bad timing. Sometimes the competition for the product is just too tough. Perhaps it is out there at a more competitive price. There are many variables to consider, and one way to get better at it is to examine your stats.
For example, I have noticed that I have higher open rates of my emails when I send them out on a Friday, instead of a Monday. Could it be more likely that people spend more time online during weekends? I guess it depends on your target market.
